We will be in Uluru for 3 days and want to see Uluru, the Olgas and Kings Canyon, would anyone tell us how realistic is this without going on any tour, but driving a rented car???

It sounds absolutely realistic IMHO
You can rent a car at Ayers Rock airport: the rock is just few KM's away, and from Uluru and Katjatjuta there are 40 km. The Kings Canyon is further away but you can do it in one day.

Yep this can be done. Uluru and the Olgas can be seen in one day if needed.
You leave the Uluru Village, (this is where all accommodation is)and drive to the Rock for a sunrise and then head to the Olgas. You can do a walk here, there are a couple you can do, in summer remember it is very hot and take lots of water, sometimes the walks are closed if too hot.
One day you could also head back to the rock and do a free ranger walk, or walk around the rock by yorself, the ranger walk is great, lots of info.
These leave at 10am each day, summer time there might do them earlier.
The drive to Kings Canyon is sealed roads....good drive.
BUT to take full advantage of this fantastic place you should do the above canyon walk early in the morning as it gets bloody hot in the afo.
I would suggest that you might stay there one night so you can do the early walk and then head back to Uluru, OR leave Uluru very early and head to Kings Canyon...

Have fun

Driving around Uluru is no problem.

Agree with 'Anne12' about the walk to the Kings Canyon. During our visit (last January) the temperature was already 35C at 8.30 am !! But it was a great experience to do !!
Alternative accommodation for the Kings Canyon Resort: Kings Creek Station (www.kingscreekstation.com.au)

happy travels

Just make sure you've got lots of water in your car, at least 5 liters per person and refill whenever you can. The roads are pretty busy around there, so don't worry about that, but in the heat of the day, you drink way more than 2 liters.

We did that and all the way to Alice Springs - just note that the rental cars in Northern Territory are not usually unlimited kms, so check that when you book. And if you don't get a 4WD, I don't recommend going on any of the unsealed roads! But I just looked and the main roads to Kings Canyon are sealed... it's when you head to Alice that the shortest way is unsealed. So, you should be fine!
