Tübingen Nice Places around Tuebingen / Stuttgart

Are there any cool towns (picturesque, etc) located around Tuebingen/Stuttgart? These towns should ideally be accessible by public transportation as I will not have access to a car. I plan to go during Sat or Sun, an ovenighter if it's further. Appreciate all suggestions.

hi there,
from Stuttgart easy to catch (in about 30 min. by d-train) are:

Esslingen - biggest town not been distroyed during WWII, oldest timberwood house in Germany, nice old ruin and walls
Plochingen- nice little town, less tourist, a must is the Hunderwasser-Haus
Bietigheim - also very nice to stroll around, perfect combination of old and new architecture (dont miss the museum in the Hornmoldhaus (spelling?)
Ludwigsburg - baroque city, one of the biggest castles in Europa and a beautiful garden

From Tübingen: Hechingen and the castle Hohenzollern, very worth

have fun

Hi, thanks for the info. Do you know if it's possible to get monthly train passes for travel around the area, buses/trains?

Will a under-26 card help in any way?

Yes, it is possible to get public transport monthly ticket to the area. Unfortunately you won't be able to travel in both cities with this ticket, as Stuttgart and Tuebingen are on different local networks. You would have to buy two seperate tickets, one for Tuebingen and one for Stuttgart. Those two together would be very expensive and not really worth the money.

Tübingen is inside the NALDO local public transport network
http://www.naldo.de/

Stuttgart inside the VVS
http://www.vvs.de

Are you based in Tübingen? As a student?
Than you may qualify for a "Semesterticket" valid one Semester (6 months), EUR 36 and covering the whole NALDO area.

Otherwise monthly ticket prices will depend on the number of zones of the NALDO or VVS you need. Makes no sense normally to buy more zones than you need on a daily base. Better to buy a day ticket for NALDO (or VVS) for further trips. And if travelling beyond this area buy a Baden-Württemberg Ticket Single (EUR 17,00).

Unfortunately I’m no longer a student and will be working there for a month and a half only. Would really like to see the surrounding towns without burning a hole in my pocket.

With NALDO, which towns are covered? Is there a map or something which shows this? The site is in German and I don’t understand.

My friend also told me that there are return tickets for weekend trips in Germany that have good value. Where can I get info in English? I think they are good for 2 people or?

Vielen dank im voraus!
