my family will be staying in the Catania region of sicily. i am interested in traveling to the italian mainland (Positano) and possibly Rome. What is the best way to travel?

You can catch a ferry directly from Catania to Napoli then a short train journey to Positano. Then back to Napoli by train and onward to Rome(same thing)
If you are driving, you will need to drive up through Reggio Calabria and into Campania and so on. The ferry journey takes some time but very relaxing
