I am planning to study abroud for 4 months at the university of KwaZulu-Natal. Would you reccommend this amount of time in Durban despite all of the crime?

You would certainly get to see plenty of the places around Durban with a stay of that duration. My dad lives in Waterfall which is on the edge of the Valley of a Thousand Hills about 30 minutes drive outside Durban - its a beautiful place so be sure to get out that way one weekend. The crime really is only where you would expect to find it - so don't go looking is my motto. I get out to see Dad every 2 - 3 years and I've never had a bad experience whilst there but we don't tend to walk around Durban city centre - only the amphitheatre and beach front area for the Sunday morning flea market.

"Despite the crime".... i promise you that I am not being rude to you but and I do understand..., I HATE THAT PHRASE!! Im from Durban and have lived and travelled all over Africa.... and still do. Currently I live in a "posh" part of London and have been mugged twice, Had my car broken into twice lost a scooter and recently had a motorbike stolen. I have had the house ransacked not more than a week ago....... but in Durban.... NOTHING... its one of the friendliest big cities in SA... i will add that there are areas one should avioid at certain times... the beach front has been extensively cleaned up etc etc.... remember it is Africa so a sensible awareness is always called for but these are always worse case scenario. You will love study in Durban.... come up to my neck of the woods at the weekends for surfing.. thats Umhalanga. But I would suggest that you buy a cheap car. any more help.... give me a shout.
