From SML, train north to Genoa - I believe you will have to change there for Milan. There are 2 train stations in Como, both with easy access to the harbor area. From the central Milan station, take the train to Como (I believe that is actually the slightly faster and more convenient of the two). BTW, you are doing 2 of my favorite places although we have driven this trip rather than go by train. Have a great time.

Santa Magherita ... where in Italy? Santa Magherita Ligure?
both railway station of Como (trenitalia and ferrovie nord) can be reached from Milan. From Santa Margherita Ligure there are direct trains to Milano Centrale and then you have to change train to go to Como S.Giovanni otherwise you should go to Milano Cadorna and from there to Como Camerlata, Como Borghi or Como Lago. I suggest to change train and not station in Milan, from Milano Cadorna to Como Lago it could take more than 1 hour plus changing railway station in Milan (quite a lot of trafic), better change in Como, much shoter. http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html http://www.fnmgroup.it/orario/index.htm

The Italian rail service's official website is at www.trenitalia.com . Look for English in the upper right hand corner. You should practice with this site to discover the various rail solutions and the types of trains involved.
I assume that you are going from S. Margherita Ligure near Portofino, yes (there are some 28 Santa Margheritas in Italy)? Then enter in the website above "S. Margherita Ligure" for the starting point and "Como Nord Lago" for the destination. You will find a number of solutions, with most of them requiring multiple changes (typically in Milan and also Genova). Note that you will have to take urban transit (a tram?) from Como S. Giovanni to Como Nord Lago in any case. Take a look at this and come back with any questions... Bill
