| Kauai | Sending a coconut to a friend Posted: Tue September 19, 2006 08:17 AM UTC
Have you ever sent a relative or friend the gag gift of a real coconut?
I have sent coconuts home from places on Maui and Moloka`i in trips past. But I have never done this from Kaua`i. To help me save some time tracking a place down on our upcoming trip, does anyone know of a place on Kaua`i that does this? Thanks for your help. |

Why don't you just pick one up off the ground and write their name on it with a permenent marker add postage and mail! No need to have it painted. We use to call these naked coconuts! If you want it painted try ABC Stores.

It's illegal to ship raw coconuts you find on the ground back to the mainland US. To be legal, they need to be USDA inspected. That's why I'm asking here to see if there is a location that has them.

My girlfriend Lee does this. She can set you up so you can paint designs on the coconuts and then she sends them to the address you give her as a postcard.
She has a kiosk at one of the large hotels as well as being in the local fairs and such. I will e-mail you some contact info for her.

Hi jelw,
Thanks for the info. I had been so busy with work tying up loose ends before vacation that I hadn't the time to pursue your suggestion before leaving. But I found Lee by accident anyway. She had a booth at the Coconut Festival yesterday in Kapa`a and I addressed one and had her ship it. Although she uses just run-of-the-mill, untreated coconuts (they are dried, however) that are not USDA inspected, she says she has never had any problems with them reaching their destination. Thanks for the help, BCT
