Getting a houseboat in Dec maybe difficult, do a google on Murray River houseboats and look for ones that are located at Manumn or Murray Bridge. Book online. Take a day trip up to Birdwood and visit the motor museum. If you like wine do a trip up through the McLaren Vales, visit Willunga and Meadows and take some back roads through some great farming country. Deep Creek Conservation Park is worth a day visit… lots of kangaroos and bush walks and fantastic views of Kangaroo Island. These are all day trips from Adelaide. If you want to go further travel down to Edithburg on York Peninsula. Great swimming and fantastic scenery. Lots of little towns to visit as yo travel down the coast. (give yourself 4 to 5 days) Plenty of cabins in most towns at reasonable prices although by mid Dec these will be very popular. Enjoy the best State in SA.

Stayed at Golden Chain Motels in S Aust last time down there. Prices averaged 85 AUD per night over 2weeks in November 2005. By the way nearly all Aust Motels have fridges; tea&coffee making facilities; ironingboards. One can save a few bucks by self catering breakfast each morning.
Suggest you visit the automobile club in Adelaide at the start of your holiday to get an accommodation guide. It lists all hotels & motels. Good luck de pedro

jade, the automobile club in south australia is called the RAA. i think they are opposite hindmarsh square in adelaide centre. (cnr pultney and grenfell st's. very easy to find) they have lots of maps and ideas for short holidays either by car or houseboat. best to book house boat very very soon!
warrawong conservation park might be a good place to take your family. night tours may have started by then too?
