| Darwin | Driving from Darwin to Melbourne Posted: Mon September 18, 2006 11:36 AM UTC
I'm moving to Melbourne from Darwin, I'm thinking between driving down or flying down, I'm wondering how much I have to pay for petrol. I'm driving a V6 Camry and I think the driving distance is about 3800km according to whereis.com directions.
IF anyone can give me a bit info on this and other relevant tips, it'll be appreciated, thanks |

Well, we don't know what mileage your car will do per litre. If we assume it uses about 10 litres per hundred kilometres, it would take 380 litres. If petrol averages about $1.30 a litre it would cost about $500.

If you have the time I would highly recommend the drive.
I did Melbourne to Darwin. I got about 9k to the litre which works out about what Colin has said:) We did Melbourne to Adelaide, Adelaide to Coober Pedy,Coober Pedy to Alice, Alice to Tennant Creek and then upward to Darwin.

Depends on which days of the week you decide to travel .... around here (Victoria), petrol is cheapest on Wednesdays. The difference between weekend petrol and Wednesday petrol is about 10 - 20 cents per litre. So depending on whether you will be travelling only on Wednesdays or weekends then Colin's figures can only be used as a (good) approximation :-)
Whichever way you decide upon, have a nice, safe trip and here's hoping you enjoy the experience :-)

True John. The cost depends on the price of petrol when you buy it - and it's always much more expensive in country areas than in the cities.

Travelling through Central Australia expect to pay $1.50 plus per litre. Also make sure you plan your fuel stops/fuel milage carefully there is not heaps of places to stop after you leave Alice.
