Santiago-mendoza-chile by bus?? need help
Posted: Mon September 18, 2006 07:19 AM UTC
I will be traveling to south america in december for a month.. I'm flying from LAX to Santiago, Chile then going to Mendoza from there to Buenos Aires and from there i'm flying to Rio. I was thinking about taking a bus (cheaper) from Santiago to Mendoza then to Buenos Aires. and flying from Buenos Aires to Rio. Is that a good idea? is there a better way to do this?? Thanks anyone for info..

it's certainly cheap going by bus from Santiago to Mendoza and then BaAs.
I would be also between BsAs and Rio by bus, but you'd better take the plane as it's a very long way. Also Santiago-Mendoza-BuenosAires but take a rest in Mendoza and enjoy their wine which is very good.

Don't miss Chile for white wine and Mendoza for red wine, as you probably will not go there (in December will be very very hot) in BsAs try the wine coming from Salta (my favourite)

Bus to Mendoza is 6-7 hours, depends how busy the customs is. A nice small city with tree lined streets and lts of outdoor cafes. There are excellent buses Mendoza to BA overnight. Try Andesmar. Definitely fly BA to Rio. That would be the best route. You can do Santiago to BA straight (they stop in Mendoza anyway) would take about 20 hours.

It's a very good idea. The bus ride from Santiago to Mendoza is spectacular, but remember to take warm clothes because when you cross the border in the high andes it's quite cold!

Almost forgot, you need your passport with you when you book the Santiago to Mendoza bus. They need proof you can cross that border. They'll check you have it with you on the bus too.

Santiago-Mendoza by bus at night is crazy! There is far too much beauty to miss. Go in the morning, or no later than 2 pm, in order to cross this gorgeous Andean terrain in daylight. Mendoza to Bs As might as well be done overnight; the terrain is flat as Kansas, with fewer towns to see. If you take an early evening coche-cama, if you can sleep in motion, you will have a couple of movies, a minimal but adequate meal, coffee service and a minimal Argentine breakfast. Thus you´ll save a night's hotel , get a couple of meals, too, and arrive in Bs As rested and ready to go in late morning. Enjoy!

Regarding what Akken says, about crossing the Chile-Argentina border by night, this is not possible: the border gets closed at 2000, and reopens again next day at 0600.
Thus, even if you gon on your own private car, crossing overland by night is impossible.

All the rest is accurate.

Besides, the ticket Santiago-Mendoza is currently $ 7000 (US$ 13), buses leave at 0800, 0830, 1200, 1330 and 1400 from Terminal Santiago (subway station Universidad de Santiago).

Yes, that particular border crossing is open 24 hours during the good weather months. I have done it twice overnight (mid Oct and late Feb) which is not a loss as I've done it around 8 times during the day. Great scenic trip.

The crossing is open 24-hours between December 15 and the second or third week of March.

This is because it is too cold for the crews to be around there by night.

Hello -
My friend and I are taking the bus from Mendoza to Santiago in a couple of weeks. We were going to buy our tickets in Mendoza when we get there. Does anyone here know if the bus goes to the Airport in Santiago?

Also, can we get our receipts stamped for the refund of the V.A.T. at the customs at the border?

And finally, do they have a currency exchange at the border? We will have Argentinean pesos, having been in Argentina for a week, and are headed directly to the airport - but will probably want dinner in between somewhere, so any tips for exchanging currency on that route would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very very much!
