Why are so many new people singing up and yet not bothering to post anything personal nor share travelogues with the VT community? Then they email and ask personal questions?

Best part is you can totally ignore them and deleted their emails. there is a certain satisfaction in that. oh and report them if their emails are abusive.

:) i think they check out your page first and then write you some compliments and then ask you to e-mail them back and when you don't, demand to know the reason why you don't want to be friends!
pathetic!

THe internet seems to make things so easy for people that they forget manners or the internet makes them lazy. Some find sites like this "disposable." Log in to get what they immediately want and then move on and forget about it. Sometimes not even thanking you for any help you may have provided.

It might not be important to some but it's really nice to get "thank you" e-mails from people who found your tips useful in planning their travels. make writing down tips less onerous... :D

I think they also like the anonymity of the internet to behave how they want. but generally on VT, I find most people are ok and even polite. I never let those trolls bother me.

Thousands of people simply sign-up, ask a question in their respective travel forum and then never return again. As you can't delete your own membership to VT, these "members" just stay there, hanging around.

It's surprising that some of them do come back. even after 3 or 4 years! And some just use the site when they travel every few years.

I know, I know... VT won't delete them... most other websites delete after at least a year of inactivity or so... it's just that I'm a very tidy person, I hate clutter and stuff lying around, I throw it away... so seeing all these empty pages pulls at my obsessive-compulsive-tidiness-strings ;-)

LOL!

Yeah, to me this "number of VT members" is like a city saying "our population is 3.7 million! (but 600,000 of those are in the cemetary...)

All to their own, I don't see it that way. They all have signed up, and can come back anytime and use the site. I only worry about the ones who sign up several memberships, that's a pain.

The Euros start popping on about now and Yanks are still hung over but insomiacs never close their eyes....anywhere. SEA's, Kiwi's and Aussies are having a casual evening on the computer. The VT lamp is always lit.

Well I can assure you the number of vt members is not used to attract advertisers. Popup ads are only viewable to nonlogged on viewers. So you can squash that "theory". And the site is hit by non-members far far more than by members. But Trolls only exist within the membership, however thankfully VT is vigilant and they don't last long :-)

Is that Friday night US time that is the quietest on vt? That would be Saturday here in Aus? Is there a page where we can look at the statistics?

Believe what you want, but you are wrong. The site does not sell advertising based on member numbers, actually.
New Zealand has a lot of rain, thats how we are green. But most of the time, people take photos in the sunshine. look around the site and you will see some less than nice weather shots. But because of what you mentioned, people at times wrongly think we are tropical, and forget our neighbour is Antarctica :-)

Hope you've clicked on the website that advertises on VT. it's our national tourism board and is an amazing website :-)

Advertisers sell on numbers of viewers, not members. VT has a very high number of viewers. The big difference in this aspect between VT and Myspace is that you can view all of VT without being a member, for Myspace you have to join. Therefore sites like Myspace have to sell their membernumbers. VT sells on it's viewer numbers.

Sounds like you are overdue for a visit Tom. Try not to come in our winter tho, unless you like skiing :-)

It helps to take a look at help ;o)

From help:

<<Though some people claim that we don’t delete accounts because higher member numbers look good for advertisers, quite the opposite is true. It’s simply a bigger hassle to determine who to delete and who not to. As for the ‘they keep the old members here for advertising claim' that's simply not true. Here’s why…advertisers couldn’t care less how many members are here. They care about how many unique visitors per month come to the site, (VT is visited by about 5 million non-members and members.) In fact advertisers tend to see active membership sites as less appealing. They are often seen as sites where people waste time on the computer. Instead of travelers shopping for a trip, they see members as people who potentially are here to send email, post forums, make friends, chat, post pictures etc. Advertisers never ask for membership numbers and don’t care. Look in the ad section you won't find a mention of the member numbers. We like the members cause we think it's cool to have so many people sign up, and because we always hope they’ll come back and decide to be active. Advertisers are focused on other indicators.>>
