Can anyone tell me more about this May 1st holiday? I'll be in Hangzhou during that time next year. Are there any special events or celebrations I can look for? How busy does the city get during this time?

VERY busy in the city. This year, we were heading out of the city on 1st, and the roads were jam packed with cars going in. 6 million people visited Hangzhou during the May holiday in 2006. And for a city of that size (2 million in the city, 6 million in the municipality), it is a huge increase.
There will be celebrations ongoing in the city centre (squares) and around the lake. I don't know exactly where or what as I always tried to avoid the crowds duringt the national holidays as I found it unbearable, but locals there should know, or then you may try posting a question on www.hangzhouexpat.com closer to the time.
