| Vernazza | winter in Cinque Terre? Posted: Sun September 17, 2006 08:29 AM UTC
Unfortunately the only time I have to travel is December to February, and I would love to visit the Cinque Terre, likely mid January to early February. This is where I've hoped to spend the "week or two to write and paint" part of my journey...
The hostel in Manarola is closed at that time; Vernazza is next on my list for "where to stay"...but what will winter there be like? How cold? How wet? Everything closed? Or at least a cafe or two for meals and hopefully at least one cheap/nice place to stay! Any input or suggestions welcome! Eric |

I've been to the towns end of february and certainly there will be some cafe's and restaurants open. The weather will be milder than vancouver of course... probably always above freezing, but close to it at night. Certainly more rain than other times of the year, but likely only a few days out of the week.
The problem is that some of the walking trails between the towns, one of the regions best aspects, can close due to inclimate weather. The plus side is there wil be much fewer crowds which plague the 5-terre in the higher season, which is pretty much March-Nov. ciao

Eric,
when you look for a room in Vernazza, make sure to ask about the heating! We just returned from a fabulous 4 days in Vernazza with the most beautiful weather, but when we thought about maybe returning in winter, we noticed that our room did not have a central heating - or at least we did not see any... I agree on the plus side that you will have far less people there, but then we did not think it was that bad! And if you are more into writing and painting, then the possibly bad hiking conditions might not affect you all that much either! Good luck!

Many thanks for your feedback and sharing your lovely photos...and Froliche Geburtstag (?!) to your husband too! I am so amazed by this site; I am learning a lot and seeing so many interesting people and places. It's wonderful. I am certainly looking forward to my travels; I just hope the winter is kind to me.

See my VT page on Vernazza we were last there in 2003 and it was getting cold. You could also stay in La Spezia to the south and day trips into the park. There you must look up artist Sergio Tedoldi who will always give tips to fellow artists. j
