Darwin Petrol - Driving from Darwin to Sydney
Posted: Sat September 16, 2006 10:47 AM UTC
I'm looking at options of getting to Sydney after a trip overland from London to Singapore. I'm not sure if I should fly from Singapore to Sydney directly or fly into Darwin and drive to Sydney. This is a trip I'd really like to do but am weighing up the costs.

Can anyone tell me what they think you'd spend in petrol on this trip? I guess it depends which way you go but any estimates would be great. If I can get a relocation car it would keep costs down too.

Thanks,

K

A lot is a conservative way of putting it.
I dont know the true distance but fuel is going to cost you A$1.50 or so / litre(today in Melbourne it's $1.24 but out in the bush 1.50 to 1.60). A corrolla size car is going to use say 7l /100km. You will not drive the straight line but "down" to Adelaide then over through Victoria and up to Sydney.
Darwin to the Alice is say 2000km the Alice to Adelaide say 1000km Adelaide to melbourne 800km the Melb to Sydney 900 km.Check out the maps for that

The hire company might want to charge extra for that run - check out Budget, Hertz, and one two of the other companies (google it)
We too will do that trip one day and it will be great but I really dont know how you would drive it on the cheap

How ever putting all that aside -
"Come on down" and I'm sure you'll enjoy Oz

After driving from London to Singapore you're worried about costs?
Remember, do what you want to do and worry about costs later.
What you have totally omitted is which way you want to travel, i.e. through Queensland or down through South Aussie, and what you might want to see on the way. Only if we know these things can we really help.
Love the other two replies, well done fellas!
Cheers, Ian

I'm going by train from London and would like to arrive in Sydney with some money! I'll be living in Sydney for a while and need to consider set up costs. Although I totally agree with your sentiments.

Don - appreciate your figures, I guess maybe $400 to $500 dollars in fuel. I'm thinking of going straight down from Darwin to Port Augusta then across to Sydney either via Broken Hill or Mildura. But like I said, of course the costs depends on the route. Just looking for a guide right now. I've seen loads of $1 a day rental cars so that should keep the costs down if I can wing one of those.

Thanks,

K

I have just done the drive from Adelaide to Darwin.
We did a fuel book for this trip, my friend has this so I will get in touch with her and find out exactly what we spent on petrol and get back to you.
You could get a campervan for this trip,
Britz was one that we saw a lot of along the way. Also there are many free off road camping places along this road as well as camping sites in towns.
I have some great info on all the places along the way, if you need any info you are welcome to email me. Just to much to type here:)
Cheers
