See all of the great museums like the Rijkmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. Take a canal tour. After dark you should hang out at the Leidesplein where there are more bars and clubs than you can imagine. Don't forget to check out the Red Light District too.

If you can't get into trouble (ie., have a wicked and wonderful time) on your own in Amsterdam - you can't get into trouble anywhere!

It's summertime, so on the sunniest day go to the beach (Zandvoort or Bloemendaal, maybe Scheveningen).
Your first day should be canal boat tour and visit local places of interest outside the canals by foot (you can consider rentink bicycles).
What are your interests? Nightime activities (clubbing), architecture (picture taking), art (33 museums)...
I have grouped all Amsterdam tips at http://www.virtualtourist.com/vt/71211/i/ , have a look.

I recommend http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/2bf0c/312/ if you want to visit some other towns in The Netherlands.

Do some virtual travelling first; enjoy your stay,

PJ
