anyone successfully made a trip from Nanjing to Tibet? Would like to go for nat week in october (am a brit national living in nanjing btw)...

I suggest you'd better prolong your trip after national holidays. Otherwise you can see nothing but only people.

My friend from Sweden made the trip this summer. But he got help from some local friend. Otherwise, it would not be easy for a foreigner to travel without joining any agencies.
Sth like a lisence or a visa has to be achieved before your trip. And you have to make an application to their office. I know there are offices in Shanghai Beijing and Chengdu, but not Nanjing.
