| Kanton Bern | Walks, other things for bad weather in the Oberland next week? Posted: Thu September 14, 2006 07:18 AM UTC
As usually happens with my holidays, looks like the Bernese Oberland had great weather last week, but next week when I go the forecast is temperatures like 9 degrees and rain....
I was hoping to go up the Jungfraujoch, use the Schilthorn and walk down, do the Schynigge Platte - First walk, maybe walk to the Oberhornsee, and several others. Now it looks like I'll need lots of rainy day things to do instead. Can people suggest good rainy day walks? I'm staying @ Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen & Lake Oeschinensee (1 night only). Will we be able to walk (& see) to the glaciers above Grindelwald at least? I know about the waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen, and I suppose we could wander about the lake towns for a day, and look at the main part of Interlaken & souvenir shop, go to the St Beatus Hohlen caves, maybe Ballenberg. Would probably also walk along the Lauterbrunnen valley to Stechelberg, and also Gimmelwald - Chilchbalm. But are there any other good walks to do when it's bad weather? I don't want to miss exploring the area (scenically I mean..I'm not much into museums and things, I'm an outdoor person) just because it's rainy. I'm feeling quite depressed, I've been looking forward to this for ages, I hope we still get to see the mountains at least one day! Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.. Jodie |

Hello Daria
I am sorry that you are going to be there on bad weather. However, you can see the weather positively. Nature has got another quality when it is raining, or cloudy. A long walk in the rain will be remembered differently. I sometimes like it. Feelings are different, there is more introversion and more reflection, on a rainy walk. There are plenty of walks on a rainy day. Only if it is completely foggy, hikes in the high mountains may get dangerous. Look here, for example: http://www.grindelwald.com/summer-de.php?page=377&frameset=3 You will certainly find lots of brochures which give you ideas what to do. What I usually do: I ask a local person (after having carefully selected different faces) what he/she would recommend me. Don't be shy. Go into a "Wirtshaus" (pub), sit down at the Stammtisch (regulars' table) and get in touch and ask. Your young age will help additionally. Make the best of your time while in Switzerland.

Some more walks for you:
- take a boat ride from Bönigen to Giessbach and walk back along the borders of the Brienzer See - take the cable car in Lauterbrunnen and walk to Mürren, back by the Gondola to Stechelberg and walk/bus to Lauterbrunnen Hope the weather is not too bad for you Jaap

Ok, thanks for those suggestions. I know going for a walk in the rain is interesting in a different way (have had plenty of experience with it! Always when I'm wanting good weather, like in New Zealand & Tasmania...), I'm sure I will enjoy it if I can forget that I'm missing fabulous mountain views...
Is the cablecar from Lauterbrunnen (I assume you mean up to Grutschalp?) isn't working, vtveen, is it? Would you say that Baden is worth visiting for the mineral spas, & is it an attractive old town? Might do that on the day we arrive in Zurich if it is rainy. We will arrive @ 12pm and it will only take 2-3 hrs to reach Grindelwald...

Yes, you are right. But you could go to Mürren and then take the train to Grütschalp and walk back to Mürren.
