Petra Hotel in Petra help needed!
Posted: Tue September 12, 2006 07:14 AM UTC
Goodness I have never read so many good/bad reports about hotels as there about Petra Hotels!! There were mentions of immodium even with the more up market hotels????
I am travelling with my (daughters 15 and 12) in October and want a clean (and that includes the bathroom!!) place to stay... Most people say stay near the entrance and not in the village as its uphill when your weary at the end of the day, but then I read that hotels will pick you up??

So does anyone have any recent recommendations??

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza Guest House, which is right by the entrance. Great location and perfectly passable hotel. We had a meal at the Movenpik next door and that seems to be fine as well.

Several hotels will pick you up: the Alanbat Hotels are a good example. This is a good hotel, especially the one high up. The only problem is that it is a long way away from the village in the evenings if you want to roam around. Otherwise the meals are excellent, the view is magnificent and everything is very clean. See http://www.alanbat.com

Petra Moon is close to the entrance, not more than a acouple of hundred yards away. See www.petramoonhotel.com. A slightly cheaper hotel than the Alanbat One (with sauna and swimming pool) but also scrupulously clean.

The hotel is never a guarantee against stomach upsets, which can be caused by too much sun, for instance.

The hotels recommended in the above posts are on the expensive/luxurious side. The Petra Moon is a two star hotel, rooms around 20JD and the Alanbat is a three star, prices a bit higher, but you can always try bargaining!

Hello Camel, nice to touch base again! I was going to say that if the Crowne Plaza is a luxury hotel, then it is a matter of comparing with what's on offer! It's adequate but certainly not in the luxury class if one is comparing with, say, The Ritz! Greatest plus is that it is very near the entrance. After a day of going round the site, walking in and walking out, it was sheer luxury to know that we only had a further totter of a relative few yards - kept me going on the way out!!

Yes I quite agree that it's good not to have to look for or to wait upon transport before heading for a shower and a cold beer (or whatever!)

The Crowne Plaza is a four star hotel - not perhaps the greatest luxury around, but considerably better than most in the neightbourhood! As you say, it's comparative!

It's great also to have a drink beside the pool in the evening, watching the sun set over the Petra rocks!

thank you all for the information, including cold beers, 3*s and 4 *s details, closest hotels etc. Will invesigate the hotels you've suggested..

You don't happen to know how cold it gets in the desert at night (Wadi Rum) at the end of october do you? How many layers we may need!??

again thanks

Better have along a good sweater and also a light jacket or vice versa. It might be pretty cold, it might not be bad at all. This advice holds also for Petra when the evenings can be coolish.

On paper the CP is a five star hotel perhaps, but it doesn't honestly provide five star service, now does it????

Not me, sorry. I know a bit about several countries, but nothing at all about Turkey.

Have a great time in Jordan - and don't forget Wadi Rum!

The hotels In Petra are good - just organise with the hotel reception desk to pick you up they are more than pleased to assist.
The Movenpick is at the entrance of Petra then there are a few others and then the others are up the hill. Catch a taxi up to the town. Its a small town but the best. I lived there for 2 years (married a local) and I lived on the main street at the top of hill and loved watching travelled moop up the hill.
Just dont drink Arak (vodak) then your fine.
