Shalom Galy,

I havent been (yet) to Brazil but since i heard from so many friends that i know and from TV programs i saw i can tell you that the Atmosphere is there even much before... So no worries about that.

Don't worry, the carnival atmosphere starts building up weeks (or even months) beforehand! Yes, go and see/ take part in one of the ensaios (rehearsals) of the big samba schools. Stay, for sure, near the beach, preferably Ipanema (much pleasanter than Copacabana).

Have a wonderful time!

Nice to know youīre planning your trip to Carnival: so that wonīt be a chance you miss it!
Yes, thereīs a Carnival atmosphere even before the Carnival itself - and youīll definetly like it! Try to go, for example, to " ensaio de escola de samba". Itīs where the "escolas de samba" (the groups that do the party during the Carnival) test their coreography and music with the people. "Salgueiro" is a good one to go. You can also try to ask your concierge in the Hotel, he will also suggest something.

Do not miss the traditional "blocos de rua". Itīs a small groups that go to the street singing and play and dancing samba. Try "Simpatia é quase amor" e "Bloco do Carlinho de Jesus", for example. Or just take a look on newspaper and weekly magazines to see their schedule.

About staying in town or on the beach... Donīt stay downtown. Stay on the beach, thereīs everything you may need and itīs more cheerfull and beautiful too.

If I can help you with anything else, just write me ok? And have fun!

Hello,

yes, I can also only agree to the poster's before me- the Carnival atmosphere will get hotter and hotter each day before the Carnival starts, and I would also strongly recommend you a visit to one of the rehearsals of a samba school there!
The beats of the samba played live from the "bateria" (the group of players) are really amazing and I guess that will be much better than going to a touristic-show in Rio!
If you want to have more info on this rehearsals of the samba schools and maybe how you can get to one of it, please look under my Rio de Janeiro page under section "must see Activities" ..I have plenty of info there and would have also a native carioca (english spoken and reliable) who could take you to one of the samba schools by car!

And yes, I guess you should stay near the beach, ...my own preference would be Copacabana, because from there you can easily walk by feet to metro-station which is a very safe and good public transport in Rio for someone who would like to explore the sights by yourself . The Hotels and Pousadas not in front of Av. Atlantica are more cheap than the ones in front of the beach and if you look under my "Accomodation" section maybe you will find a hotel which suits your interests already.

If you have further questions or need another advice on Rio or Brazil, please feel free to ask me!

Greetings
Evelyn

I recommend you to stay in Copacabana where you can go easily to everywhere in Rio.As to the Carnival you have to book a place to stay 2 or 3 weeks before the Carnival.
See you!
