Yellowstone National Park Uncrowded camping
Posted: Mon September 4, 2006 06:42 PM UTC
Hi,

We're planning a trip to Yellowstone in '07 and would be grateful for any info on camping in the park. We aren't crazy about the campgrounds where you can touch your neighbor and there is no privacy at all. We have two teenagers so something totally primitive probably wouldn't work. Thanks a lot for your help!!

Which part of the park are you interested in?

Up in Mammoth, on the way to Gardiner there is wonderful camping away from crowds and close to rivers.
West Yellostone as well.
Remember that you MUST REGISTER AND APPLY FOR PERMITS through the Park Service.
Ask them to provide you with the latest information on back country camping for whichever region you're interested in.
Here is a handy website: http://www.yellowstone-natl-park.com/camper.htm

Good luck and be careful, Yellowstone is truly wild and unspoiled in many places!

The last time we went we camped at Grant Village and Mammoth. While there were obviously people around us we never felt crowded. The sites were large enough not to be cramped. As far as I remember we just drove in, first come first serve, but maybe that has changed.

Don't believe there is any private camping in Yellowstone in the public campgrounds. If you backpack back into "the wilds", primative camping, it would be different. The campgrounds fill up early. The north campground not quite as popular as others.

Yellowstone can be hot in the summer. A very unique place. Make sure you check out Old Faithful Lodge whether you stay there or not.
