some more advices

Within two weeks, I'll finally discover Hungary with two friends... We'll be there for (only) one week
We first plan to spend a few days in Budapest itself and then rent a car to discover the country.
We were thinking about the following:
* wednesday, going to Tokaj to discover the wine area
* thursday, direction Pecs where we plan to arrive in the evening
* saturday, back to Budapest
Does it make sense? We'll miss the Balaton area, is it such a big deal? What would be better Balaton or Tokaj?

About accomodation, looks like we can find some good places from www.tokaj.hu. Any personal experience?
What would you recommend for Pecs ?

Thanks,

JF

Tokaj and Balaton r both interesting places.
Well, at Balaton u could also swim, sunbath.. it is "Hungarian iviera".
Pity that u'll miss it but on the othetr hand Tokajis also a must. Both regions r known wine producers.
It's a tough choice, I don't know what is better.
Anyway enjoy Hungary :)

Hello,

Actually the best way to go from Tokaj to Pecs is to get back to Budapest (Motorway 3 or M3) and take M7 to Siofok (south "capital" of Balaton) and then take highway 65, 61, 611 and 66. It is not the shortest one, but by far the quickest. And you can enjoy a spash in Balaton to/from Pecs. (motorway toll usually paid by rental companies, so there is no surcharge for you. In case you rent a car where it is not covered you need to buy a vignette for 4 days for 1000 HUF or for 10 days for 19000 HUF)
Concerning Tokaj, see my page with experiences of a recent trip (rating is welcomed :)
Concering Pecs accomodation check back forum, Ocicat visited Pecs recently and recommended a place not a while ago. Also concider to go a bit more south and visit Villany, the read wine area of Hungary.

Have fun

Csaba

Thanks Inga! You see, at the end, I will try the Tokaji Aszu!! Definitely better to taste it in a local cellar than to buy one bottle in a supermarket over here ;-)

Csaba, thanks for the route, it will definitely be useful. I searched the forum for an accomodation recommendation from Ocicat but the only thing I found was an ineresting thread about the bathouses ;-) I have also checkedd the accomodation tips but nothing really conclusive so far...

Btw I've also (re)visited your pages, nice ones! Looks like it will be difficult to stay sober, I will also have to test Unicum...

OK. I digged out the hotel in Pecs for you. Here is the page:
http://www.virtualtourist.com/f/p/527c/
See bottom.

You can always rely on Google :)

Unicum is also my favourite, but if we talk about strong drinks you should taste "palinka" as well. It is a strong spirit made from fruits, like apricot or plum.

OK, enough of drinking advice! Hungary is not only about drinks. So taste "Gundel pancake" too :)

Have fun

Hello!

I live in Pecs, so maybe I have some interesting information for you.
In my opinion is the best hungarian wine are in Villany beside Pecs. Villany is a beautiful small village with many winecellar. You can rent a room here usually too for one or more days. In Villany the are good dry red wines. Some of the vinegroovers won the Winemaker (sorry, I don't know the word exactly :) ) of the year. For example Gere Tamas is my personal favourite.

But in Pecs there is a lot of "must see" museum (for example Csontvary, Vasarely - they are painters -), the "Okereszteny Mauzoleum ", a christian mausoleum from the 4th century.

You should see the www.pecs.hu page for more information.

http://www.pecs.hu/varosnezes/ is a sightseeing tour, but the english pages don't work, so it is only in hungarian.

sorry,
I did it something wrong :)

So, you can find another wine area next to the Balaton: Badacsony. They have fine wine especially dry white if you like it. Badacsony is an area and town at the Balaton's northern side (what is better destination at that lake because of the southern side's very low water level).

Hi!

Well in my opinion Tokaj is better than Balaton. And if you visiting Tokaj don't leave without visiting Eger. It's not far from Tokaj, bu it's worth. There is the castle with the cellar. (in the cellar there is a good pub and you may try the 1000 old hungarian weapon th hungarian bow.) And at Tokaj don't miss the 6 puttonyos Tokaji aszú! One of the hungarian specialitis and it's good for your body!

Have a nice time in my mother country!

Thanks to all for the advices, unfortunately the last ones arrived while I was visiting this wonderful country...

Finally we stuck to the plan, there are so many wine regions in Hungary (amazing!) that it was not possible to visit all of them in one week ;-)
A nice alternative was to visit the house of Hungarian wines in Budapest, more than 50 wines to taste...

Nagykifla> i agree with you the 6 puttonyos Tokaji aszú is delicious but I personnally prefer the Forditas, less expensive and less sweet...
Anyway, I've brought back a bottle of each ;-)

Now, time to share this great experience, I'll try to find the time to build my Hungarian page...
