Liège short stopover in Liege
Posted: Mon September 4, 2006 12:02 AM UTC
I may have a short (1.5 hours) stopover in Liege, via train at Guillemins. Is there anything in a reasonable distance,on foot, worth seeing? I don't want to wander far from the station and miss my connection.

There is not a lot that could be classed as touristy about Liege. It's a big city and given 90 minutes I can't recall anything to see in the area of the station. There are bars and cafes so I would say you are best to find one and have a couple of Belgian beers and a snack. The bars are fine but Liege is an industrial place and if it has secrets they are well hidden. Great people, great beer but not much to see.

I disagree with Paul on the fact there is nothing to see in Liege (I can send you my photoalbums). Actually I was charmed by the city, expected less, got more.
But I agree with him that 1 hour near the station Guillemins? I don't think you will be able to see much.
I went to the old centre of Liege (station Palace).

I would like to see the old center, but the map shows it to be about 2K from Guillmins, and about the same from Palais. Maybe I'll come back from Maastricht on one day when I have more time. Who knows?

yes you have to switch trains probably at Guillemain to Palace. You need more time.
It could be a good idea to do it when you have a day.
And then it depends on what you like to do.
There is a nice huge market along the river on Saturdays (morning and early afternoon); you can walk around the city (I did it once with a guide so learned a tiny bit more then when you just walk around); ask also for the walks in the hills of the city. That part I liked very much! I did a combination of the 4 existing walks and that was good for at quite some hours :)
It also depends on the weather: there is a parkside and that could be slippy if it has rained but the part with the little stairs is nice really.

and the album of my single visit a few weeks later (on my own pace):

see you in Antwerp soon? :)

Hi Iris
I checked your pics, they are great.
I'm glad that you like my city. For the moment with the Christmas market it's just GREAT.
Just a simple thing, the market along the river Meuse is each sunday morning.

Warm regards from Liege
