I have transferred between Milan and the Italian Lake Region before a few years ago. Here is what I can remember.
- http://www.airwise.com/airports/europe/MXP/ 1. Always stop at the Tourist Information office at the airport to get help (they ususally speak good english). 2. Take a cheap (1 or 2 euros) bus from the airport to Milan Gallarate train station. 3. Take the frequent trains between Gallarate train station and Milan Centrale train station. 4. Take the 40 minute / 11 euro train ride from Milan Centrale to Como. http://www.raileurope.com/us/rail/fares_schedules/index.htm

P.S. I know this might sound complicated but we did this with a lot of luggage and did not know a word of italian. If we could do it, you can do it.

There is a ( a relatively infrequent) bus from the airport to Como itelf, but I don't know the details. Ask at the airport.

I am sorry to say that I did not go to Lake Garda. I did go to Lake Como and Lake Maggiore (Lago Maggiore). Both were beautiful. I know nothing about Garda but based upon everything else I have seen in the region I would imagine it to be beautiful also.
Ciao

Hi, I've been to both. I really enjoyed Lake Garda, especially Bardolino and Sirmione. I have just returned from Lake Como, I stayed in Como actually. I cannot say the difference between the 2 cause I enjoyed them both, but unknowingly I just fell in love with Como. I would definitely return there. If it might be of any help, I am building the page which will be ready soon. I stayed at Albergo Firenze, accessible from everywhere. As for transportation I went to Como from Switzerland but then travelled to Malpensa back home. From Malpensa, ride the Malpensa Express and Stop at Saronno after 20 mins. Then from Saronno, ride the train to Como which will take around 30 minutes. Only 8 Euros the whole trip. Really really worth it.
There are direct buses from Malpensa to Como: http://villaolmo.mib.infn.it/How_to-reach.htm Email me for any other info.
