Bus. Think the best way is to go to Karlovac and thare switch buses to Rijeka/Opatija.

These guys are pretty good in predicting weather. Check out their 10 days forecast for Sredisnja Hrvatska (Central Croatia, that is area of Karlovac, Zagreb, etc).

Monday Sunny, Tuesday possible showers, later that week should be sunny (that is written in the text at the bottom of page). Mornings fresh, during the day warm (not hot though). Sounds good.

It's easy. In front of the airport building you'll see Croatia Airlines/Plesoprijevoz buses. They meet arrivals and take you straight to the Zagreb bus station.
