| Fussen | doing the Romantic Road backwards? Posted: Mon August 28, 2006 12:04 PM UTC
hello.
I'm lsnding in Munich and I was wondering if I could do the Romantic road (by train, I have Eurail) from Fussen to Wurzberg- I thought of spending one night in Rothenburg and one night in Wurzberg (and continue my trip to Frankfurt)- is that at all possible? |

Of course it is possible (like in that old joke: "I'm sorry, I'm afraid you can't get from here to there"), but whether it is doable with not too much time spent on the train - check on www.bahn.de for schedules.
(bear in mind it is Würzburg or Wuerzburg, not Wurzberg) My estimate is that you will have to go through Würzburg to reach Rothenburg from Füssen, but I'm not sure.

Hi,
coming from Fuessen (also here you have to add an 'e' for the 'ü' if you write it on an english keyboard) you will first get to Rothenburg. This places complete name is 'Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber'. Then a few kilometers further is Wuerzburg. Here is the german rails homepage (english): http://www.db.de/site/bahn/en/start.html For 'Füssen' write 'Fuessen' and for 'Würzburg' write 'Wuerzburg'. Use one of the two possible writings, but don't skip the dots above the 'u'. It is a different letter in German and will cause problems. Have fun and hopefully better weather as it is now... Best wishes from Fuessens neighbourhood! Christian.

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/e From: MUC airport To: Munich To: Fuessen To: Hohenschwangau (this is the bus stop where Neuschwanstein Castle is close) To: Rothenburg ob der Tauber To: Wuerzburg To use an Eurail pass makes barely sense for the above route. If you don't have a consecutive rail pass anyway. Rothenburg to Würzburg is EUR 10,00. And for the other trips you can use the Bavaria Ticket. Covers all local trains in Bavaria and nearly all other local public transport. E.g. the bus from Füssen to Hohenschwangau, the trams in Munich or Würzburg etc. That's something a normal train ticket or rail pass doesn't cover. Bavaria Ticket Single (1 person) EUR 18,00 Bavaria Ticket (2-5 persons) EUR 25,00 On weekdays valid however only past 9am. This route is only served by local trains anyway. To be sure you can select at the DB timetable as means of transport "only local transport" (if you want to use the Bavaria Ticket).
