| Oaxaca de Juárez | Day of the Dead in Oaxaca Posted: Sun July 6, 2003 02:55 AM UTC
I'm in the beginning stages of thinking of taking about a week to go to Oaxaca for the Day of the Dead festivities.
I wondered if anyone has traveled there during that holiday, and, if so, is it overrun with tourists? In addition, is it too late to get inexpensive accomodations? Other information, including pros and cons about being in Oaxaca during that time would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

i wouldn't worry about just showing up.
i haven't been to oaxaca, but i visited todos santos in guatemala for the day of the dead and eventhough it was packed with foreign visitors, me and my freinds managed to find a place to stay without breaking our budget.

Why Oaxaca? because out of Mexico, the best festivities for the Dead take place in Oaxaca and in Michoacan, it is a unique spectacle and quite different in both places.
In my particular oppinion I would choose Michoacan, particularly at Janitzio, an Island at Lago de Patzcuaro, you'll find the processions in ligthed boats amazing!

I actually think I know someone in Oaxaca--if he's still there and I can track him down--and always heard it was the place to go for Day of the Dead festivities.
I did a quick check on expedia last night from DC to Oaxaca and to Mexico City, and the price, right now, was far to steep for various dates at the end of October. Anyway, if anyone has ideas about a cheap way to get there, I'd love to hear them. thanks for your responses.

The bus from Laredo to Monterrey is about 3 hours, to San Luis Potosi was 10ish, so to Mexico City? Maybe 14 or so? That's my best guess since the last time I was in MC, I flew from Laredo to Mexico City.
