I just returned from Congo and crossed the border from Zambia into Congo without getting a visa in advance. I had a resident of Congo with me (my son) and we both had a friend help us with the paper work getting in. If you do not know anyone in Congo or at least have a friend at the border I would suggest getting a visa while in Zambia at the consulate in Ndola. This is a small city just south of Kitwe. This will add an extra day to your trip, but without connections at the border of Congo it is really a hassle and very easy to be conned out of alot of money. Congo is not for the uninitiated traveler and even for the hardy it is very difficult. If you have a car make sure that you have all the paper work in order. If you are driving in Zambia you already know that you will need emergency triangles, a fire extinquisher, a corbon emissions tax receipt and proof of insurance. These can be asked for at any police check point (and there are many) Between Kitwe and the Congo border there are at least 7 check points.

While driving in Congo you will encounter the Yellow police. These are military personnel assigned to traffic duty and basically there to make your life miserable. Again, they can stop you for anything or nothing, but if they stop you they will find something wrong and it will cost you money (basically a bribe) to get out of that situation. The best defense against these guys is to drive a Toyota Land Cruiser 70 series as this is what all the UN people and other government people drive and they basically do not bother you if you are driving one of these vehicles.. Otherwize...have fun in Congo,
