the cheapest hotels in lisboa are little hard to book in advance.
they are mostly run by pakistani immigrants and do not have web pages or belong to internatonal booking sites.

another cheap option could be youth hostels.
they often have private rooms too and are mostly very well organised.

I hope this helps...

For accomodation a nice option could one of the two youth hostels. You can book on-line or through IBN at one Youth Hostel near you anywhere in the world.

Prices from 12,5Euros.

For information on Lisboa's Youth Hostels go to

http://www.pousadasjuventude.pt/default.asp?HSPagina=Conteudo&CdConteudo=13828

http://www.pousadasjuventude.pt/default.asp?HSPagina=Conteudo&CdConteudo=13830

I think the first one would be a better choice as it is in the city center and near IST and i believe "Congress of Matematics Physics" may be in IST - Instituto Superior Técnico (http://www.ist.pt).

If you can get a room in one of these youth hostels you can always try one pension like Claus adviced you.

I think "Pensão Coimbra e Madrid" can be a nice choice from (around) 20Euros per night.
Phone number: +351 213 421 760

"Residencial Saldanha" seems also nice.

http://www.residencialsaldanha.pt/html/residencial_saldanha_uk.html

It's possible to book online. Single bedrooms from 35Euros.

You can go to

http://www.portugalvirtual.pt/accommod/lisbon/indexpe2.html

for an extensive list of Hotels, Apartments, Albergarias Inns, Pensions, Guest Houses, Camping Sites rated by stars. Watch out because some of the 2-stars pensions are more expensive than some 3 or 4-stars pensions!

================

Lisboa ---> Madrid by train
Prices from 51,50Euros one way and 82,40Euros with return.
The train departures from Lisboa at 22h and arrives to Madrid at 08h40m.

For more information go to

http://www.cp.pt/servicos/c_inter/e_lusitania.html

Good luck.
If you need more information feel free to email me.

Cheers!
