| Cuzco | getting to ayacucho from cuzco Posted: Sun August 20, 2006 01:12 PM UTC
Does anyone have experience going by bus from Cuzco to Ayacucho? If so how long, etc ...any details welcomed. Are there any flights from Cuzco to Ayacucho - without having to fly first to Lima and then back up to Ayacucho.I can't find any. Thanks.

I did teh reverse, from Ayacucho to Cusco. It's long and painful because 95% of the way, the road will not be paved.
We took a bus from Ayacucho to Andahuaylas, stayed there two nights and then another bus to Cusco. You'll probably have to do the same in reverse and stay one night at least in Andahuaylas. The Andean landscapes were beautiful and I have no words to describe them. This is why I'd travel daytime (not sure they are night buses anyway). This said I have to say that the bus between Andahuaylas and Cusco was the most derelict and uncomfortable bus I have ever been on in my entire life. The seat was broken, the window kept falling off etc... be prepared and if poss get a window seat so you will not be disturb by people standing in the aisle (more like half sitting on you with their bag of potatoes, kids etc...) Have a look at my Ayacucho & Andahuaylas pages for tips on the towns. I have not uploaded transporation tips yet but can check what bus companies we used if you want.

A couple of years ago my son took this trip intending to go all the way through without stopping but his bus broke down resulting in a 12 hour delay in the middle of the trip.

Checked my notes. The transport company is Los Chankas. Each part of the trip Cusco-Andaluaylas and Andaluaylas-Ayacucho should cost approx 25 soles and take approx 10 hours.
