Does Aachen train station have lockers available for temporary storage of luggage (just a few hours)? Not small items, but suitcases. Is this something that is available in most German stations, at least the larger ones?

only in UK - all German stations have lockers in use. Aachen is a major station with lockers available.

Luggage lockers were removed from Italian rail stations due to the original "war on terrorism" - when the Italians were fighting the Red Brigades in the 1970s.

there are lockers in Aachen Hauptbahnhof.

Not only in the UK with the IRA. Also as previously said in Italy. But yes, Germany still have lockers and major stations such as Cologne also have staffed left luggage offices.
