We are coming to visit Hawkes bay ,staying in the Scenic Circle Te Pania Hotel.
Can we get around the sites and places like HAVELOCK etc by public transport or do we hire a car ?

Also any one reccomend any eateries around the hotel ?

Depends on what you have in mind to visit.
There is public transportation in and around Napier (http://www.nimons.co.nz), another possibility is to take guided tours (for instance to Cape Kidnappers)or as you mention take a rental car, which allows to visit 'off the beaten path' destinations.

as a local i of course drive everywhere,but as for u getting around i think our public transport is not up to it.a car hire would.be aprox 70 nz dollor i guess,but the town, the hill and the sea fronts would keep u busy for a day'.
restaunts. for us its ;the hogs breath;just next door about $27main ;breakers ;few doors down ,very livley and quick $16 ,these are our favorites.but there are other good ones further out,theres a neet little movie theater between the 2 eateries with interesting movies $12 we go often.
