We are traveling from France to Italy and we need to get from Avignon or Nice, Fr to Cinque Terre in the most efficient/affordable way-train schedules not available yet.

from nice to cinque terre you will have to probably change train in Genoa and/or in La Spezia.

You can go from Nice Ville to Ventimiglia to Monterosso al Mare (one change in Ventimiglia). You can also go via Genoa but need to reserve for that trip.

Yes, I know it's a German web site, but it is in English and has your connections on it. I just checked the schedule for next week and have no idea when you are going so don't know if the schedule is yet available. You could check the nearest available date to get an idea of their scheduling.

The best way to get from Nice to Monterosso is by train, as Monterosso is at the bottom of the mountains that lead to the autostrada above. In addition to this, ONLY local Taxis are allowed on the streets of Monterosso, and if you DO come by auto, you have to leave your car in the lot (Pay) at the end of town, so renting an auto in Monterosso is NOT a good idea.
I don't have a copy of the train schedule however, probably the fastest way from France to Monterosso is to go to Genoa by express train, and then go BACK to Monterosso on the local that stops in all the cinque terre villages.

i did the backwards route (cinque terre-nice) by train and it was easy... got my ticket the morning of travel.
