What is the best time of year to visit Sedona? We're both recently retired so we can pick and choose. Also would appreciate tips of what we should be sure to see and experience.

I would say any time between September and November. Weather will be not too hot, the autumn colours will be out so take a trip to Oak Creek Canyon. You can also get a 4 wheel drive tour to see the red rocks around Sedona, and of course, you have to catch a sunset or two.
Nice day trips if you have a car would be: Montezumas castle - an ancient indian settlement Jermome - a mining ghost town now inhabited by artisans Painted desert - head towards Tuba City Camp Verde - old military post from the 19th century and indian wars

I would agree with Sept-Nov. Or Mar-early May. Fall will have some changing leaves and be cooler though. If you decide to stay in the Sedona/Oak Creek area, check out this place. I stay here from time to time to get out of the valley. It's really a neat setting. Have fun!
