Playa del Carmen Renting a scooter and riding it
Posted: Tue August 15, 2006 12:06 PM UTC
I'm going to Mayan Riviera at the end of September for a couple of weeks.
How much does it cost to rent a scooter, which documents does one need to rent it and is it safe to ride it?

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Playa del Carmen RE: Renting a scooter and riding it

Renting a scooter in Playa del Carmen should be easy. There are several car and scooter rental places in town on or near Avenida Quinta. We rented a car a few times from Buster Car Rental on Avenida 10 near calle 12, and it was fine. Each day cost about $45 USD. One day we rented a jeep and it was more expensive. There was a scooter rental place right across the street, but I don't recall the name. Although we didn't rent scooters in Playa, we did on Cozumel. It was around $20 or 25 USD for the day. We felt safe on the scooter on Cozumel, but I'm not sure I would be as confident on the highway on the mainland. The only documentation we ever needed was a US drivers license and a credit card.

Have fun!

Note that some rental places recycle wrecked scooters and rent them out. Two of us rented scooters on Cozumel and one of the scooters got a flat tire and the other broke down ten miles out of town. Make sure you rent from a place that rents newer scooters. PDC is so small you can walk around it if you are staying in the central area and you can't ride scooters on the pedestrian mall anyway.

Check for dents & photo them if possible ( time should be on it ) They take credit cards for the most part. If you dent them you will pay dearly.

You need a credit card and your ID,if you want to rent for 2 weeks you could make a good deal. But many stupid drivers in Playa del Carmen, take care.

Umm.. yeah, there's not *really* much need for a scooter in PDC. Unless you're living there for awhile and need to make regular trips to a grocery store. ...Even then. It would be nice to explore the entire town, but I think the side streets are way, way too bumpy. You'd be better off with a regular bike. Two years ago I saw a man covered in blood being put into an ambulance, his scooter was all wrecked from a car accident.

...And I *really* don't think you want to be driving it on the highway bewteen the towns. (Cripes! That's a scary thought.)

My advice: Use a regular bike in Playa, use a bus if you want to go to other towns, rent a scooter only if you're on an island (Cozumel or Isla Mujeres). Mexico's not really "scooter friendly" like some of Europe is.
