The Bellavista Hostel always gets good feedback from my friend's kids travelling through:

Hi i advice you the best area is Providencia not bellavista, bellavista is more for night outings but not an area to sleep at,. providencia has all the subways and buses around, the best hostel is chillihostel in providencia.

There is a nice hostel, right at the heart of Bellavista (the corner of Pio Nono and Antonia Lope); it is a conventional hotel and a youth hostel as well.
BTW, I used to live just around the corner of it some 18 years ago... well, but that's another story.

I will look for its exact address and phone and will post them here but, as Pooja says, Bellavista is more a place to get out and party, rather than to stay, as it gets VERY noisy and lively on Fridays and Saturdays.
Apart from Providencia, good hostels and mid-range inexpensive hotels are found in the central area of Santiago, Paris-Londres quarter (see my Accomodation page for Santiago for these), Lastarria quarter (just a 5' walk from Bellavista) and Plaza Brasil (another bohemian area).
Plus, just across the street from Bellavista, in Plaza Italia area, is the Residencial Lilia and Carlos, on Almirante Simpson 32.
It charges some US$ 15 per person, with breakfast, and is a preferred among climber and mountaineer friends who come regularly to Chile (well, it is next door to the Federacion de Andinismo).
Its phone number is (56-2)222 6086

Daniel
