Skopje Driving from Skopje to Tirana in Albania
Posted: Sat August 12, 2006 07:01 PM UTC
I will be taking a car trip from Skopje to Tirana.
On route I want to go via Tetovo and Ohrid and then west to Albania.(later to Durovnik in Croatia
I have never been to this part of the world.
Any tips, what should not be missed, do and don't do, road condition, all will be highly appreciated.
Thanks

I just game back from Tirana in Albania. Albania rouds are very very bad and narrow. In Macedonia roads are good. Albania the city streets are get worse in central citys. I like it Albania very much. Its so different form Europa. Its more like white India for us.

It is not so bad as said on previous reply. From Skopje to Ohrid, if you have time, make sure you check out Mavrovo compound, it is on your way. on the autobahn you will be required to pay toll so prepare some macedonian denars. Depending on time you have available, i would recommend some sightseeing in Ohrid and nearby Struga. Crossing the border from the ohrid, do not miss visiting and eating fish in village on Drilon, in Albanian part of Lake Ohrid near the town of Pogradec.

Albanian roads are not the best but part from the border to Tirana is quite decent. Once you drive to elbasan you have to options, driving via Qafa e Krabes (very scenic but very poor condition of roads and sharp turns) or via Rrogozhina and Durres ( newly reconstructed roads and part from Durres to Tirana is autobahn). The first option is some 40 km shorter but in time frame you will arrive faster if using second one.

If you decide on Elbasan-Rrogozhine-Tirana, be very cautious after passing Rrogozhina and turning on the right to Durres. It is a very sharp hairpin bend.
In albania you do not have to pay toll.

This is all i can think off right now. Please contact me if you need further or more detailed information.

Just returned from the area. Drove everywhere. I agree with tinushi re condition of roads. Many people warned me not to go to Albania due to terrible roads and unnamed horrors that would likely happen to a woman traveling alone. My interest peaked, I traveled through the country to Croatia. The roads are essentially no better and no worse than Macedonia. And the Albanians are the nicest people I met, followed by close second and 3rd, macedonia and Kosovo. Does anyone know why Albania and the Albanians have this undeserved reputation, even among people who should know better? Also, I have found that if roads are rugged, just slow down and drive carefully!
