| Positano | Rome to Positano Posted: Fri August 11, 2006 11:22 PM UTC
My husband and I are scheduled to arrive at FCO at noon after a long flight. (We were unable to fly to Naples.) We would like to go to Positano the day of our arrival.
Is it sensible to hire a driver to pick us up at FCO to drive us to Positano? Or is there a more sensible approach? Considerations: We are shipping our luggage directly to the hotel in Positano and we will be each carrying only a small personal bag with us. I speak very limited Italian. We are not spendthrifts and we dislike getting ripped off, but we are willing to pay for convenience. Thanks. Ana Isabel |

Friends hired a car service- loved the driver but it cost major money. We have always rented a car, not cheap, but gives great freedom to visit all the highlights of the Amalfi coast like Ravello. Almost all trip is on a wide open autostrada without toll, and the last bit is on a hilly and winding road, but well bunkered and wide enough. We feel the difficulties of driving on the peninsula are badly overrated. However, if driving is not your thing, the alternative is 3 trains and a bus. Train into Rome, then into Naples, and switch to the local Circumvesuviano train to Sorrento. Then a SITA bus to Positano. Some, including Jetgirly, prefer the ferry (hydrofoil) from Naples to Positano, but that requires getting to the Naples harbor from the train while the C-V train is adjacent.

Don't make it too complicated: best is to take one of the frequent trains from Roma Termni station to Salerno (example: Rome dep 13:45, Salerno arr. 16:16, or Rome dep. 15:45, Salerno arr. 18:16), then continue by SITA bus that stops right in front of the Salerno station. Fares are cheap and travel is most comfortable.
Information site for SITA bus: http://www.summerinitaly.com/planning/public_trans No reservation is needed, the train ticket can be bought at the station, the bus ticket from the bus driver. Have a nice trip. Richard

Salerno works very well, requires a change of bus in Amalfi for the last leg into Positano. One shudders to think of how crowded Positano would be if it were a little easier to get to.
