| Siena | Chianti Wine Tour Posted: Fri August 11, 2006 09:00 PM UTC
My wife and I will be in Siena next month. Our hotel offers a van tour of the Chianti wine area at an advertised price of 65 Euros each. If anyone has taken a similar tour I'd be interested in your opinion of it.
Thanks |

Never taken a tour but if that includes tastings and lunch, it's probably worth it. Unless you are comfortable driving around a foreign country and have a good map and know where you are going, the tour is probably wise.
There are some people here at VT who use tours and hopefully they will give you some advice on names of tour companies. The area is gorgeous; the wineries are excellent and virtually any meal you get will be very good. It sounds like a fun way to spend a day and September is lovely in Tuscany.

the tour will be worth for the driving, because u don't have to stress for the streets and signs
but for the quality of wine/food you taste.. forget it.. it'll not be good.. i've lived in toscana since i was born, and you eat/drink what you pay for.. in this case... with 65 euros you pay the car and the guide.. wine will be poor quality but yes, if u don't feel like renting a car and drive around by yourself, it'll be ok remember that the real tuscan products are not where tourist masses go ciao and welcome :)

That sounds like a lot of money to me, personally. When we drove through the Chianti region during our visit I wasn't particularly impressed. Lots of little forested hills, like the Ozarks but with grape vines.
If you are wanting a day out for some good wine, how about taking the bus to Montalcino? They have an enormous enoteca (wine shop) in an old castle keep right in the middle of town. You could sample some of the local Brunello, have a nice meal, grab a gelati and best of all do everything on your own time without being taken to some backroads taverna because the owner is in cahoots with the hotelier. Just my 2 cents! Don't forget Siena has its own vast enoteca, literally hundreds of wines on the menu. Happy travels (and tippling)!

hello jayhawk
the best wine doesn't come from MontLCIno anymore... you tourists should top believing this.. because you are missing a lot somewhere else in Toscana :) ciaooo
