We'd like to head up in the direction of Sa Pa (during the week) in September. I've heard that Bac Ha is a less touristy alternative. Does anyone have any opinion on this? Is it also good for walking, cycling, picturesque? Or is Sa Pa not actually that bad during the week and more scenic?

I forget what time of the week I went up there but it was pretty busy. In retrospect Bac Ha might have been a better option. Still, no regrets.

Sapa is worth seeing. It's busiest at weekend then if you go during week days, it's not a problem.
About Bac Ha, yes, you can see this area if you want a quieter place than Sapa. Bac Ha has a weekend market on Sunday morning, this is the most special market in Lao Cai, or in The North Vietnam. That's the reason Bac Ha is also crowded at weekend. The scenery is also beautiful, can cycle.

Thanks guys. Maybe we'll just stick with Sapa seeing as we'll be going during the week, assuming BA doesn't cancel our flight :)
