HI! Otjes:
From Singapore, Silkair (http://www.silkair.com/mbe/application/mbe) flies to Balikpapan direct. I may be wrong, but I don't think any of the Malaysian airlines fly to Balikpapan....

Yes Silk Air are the only ones that do a direct flight these days. Air Asia stopped KL to Balikpapan a little while ago.
The schedule is Mon, Wed, Thurs and Sat it leaves Singapore at 7.55am Tues, Fri and Sun at 13.50 Failing this, you can fly via Jakarta to Balikpapan it is a little cheaper.

What would be a "normal" price flying from SIN to BPN?

Sorry, I have never bought a ticket Singapore to Balikpapan only Balikpapan to Singapore and the price ranges up to US$400 round trip. I understand that buying the ticket out of Singapore is slightly less expensive.
In comparison, I purchased round trip ticket on Garuda, Balikpapan - Jakarta - Singapore for US$230 and I can stopover in Jakarta (on one leg) if required....which I do. Hope this helps

HI! Otjes:
Balikpapan is a rather "cold" spot. The rates offered by Silkair is S$700 per pax without tax and surcharges.
