Halifax Nova Scotia on a budget
Posted: Mon August 7, 2006 05:55 PM UTC
Hi all,

I'm flying into Halifax on the 25th of August (or perhaps the 28th). I have one week of travelling to do before I meet family back in Halifax for the 1st of September, where I will spend the long weekend with them. Since I will have an opportunity to see Halifax on the long weekend, I want to explore other areas of Nova Scotia (natural beauties!) first. Can anyone suggest places to travel outside Halifax that I can access inexpensively, and by bus? I keep hearing wonderful things about the Cabot Trail, but I suppose that is accessible only by car...Ive also heard things of peggies cove. Please share all!

Thank you!

Hi

I live in Halifax and you are right . You really should try to get to the Cabot trail . A car is the best way , but there are buses . One is the Acadian Lines which is$80.00 return web site http://www.smtbus.com/en/rech_h_resultats.asp This would take you to Baddeck which is the start of the trail.

A better alternative might be The Cabot Trail Hostel . They offer Dorm 10 person bunkhouse for $20.00 and they have transportaion there . If you book a whale watching package they offre transportaion Halifax to Cape Breton $49 .

There is another package called Salty bear ,which will take you on a 4 day tour...Cape Breton , and then to Prince Edward Island . It's $259.00 including accomadation. Here's their site. http://www.saltybear.ca/4day.html

I hope this helps.

Canada is such a car place. There is just not any other way to explore the beauty of Nova Scotia. I found a two-day Cabot trail bus tour for $275 single occupancy, but it goes from Halifax around the Cabot trail and back in two days, spending only one night away.

I think the cheapest thing to do is to rent a car, and stay in hostels and cheap B&B's, and drive it at your pace - hiking the trails you choose, etc. When we rented a car, price for the car was in the neighbourhood of $150 per week plus gas. Seemed pretty reasonable to me.

By the way, Peggy's Cove is about an hour outside Halifax. You may want to do that with your family on the weekend.

If you just cannot arrange a car, perhaps you can take the bus from town to town on the Evangeline Trail - the trail that goes from Truro to Grand Pre to Annapolis Royal to Digby, etc. Each town has things to see - the tides on Bay of Funday, about Acadians, about early Canadian history, fishing for scallops, whale watching, etc., but again each attraction is not at walking distance from the downtowns. Maybe you need to advertise for a co-traveller with wheels. Good luck!
