| Pompeii | Tour guide information Posted: Mon August 7, 2006 04:22 PM UTC
We (three couples)are planning a trip to Pompeii in November 2006 and I am trying to develop information about hiring a tour guide. It appears that some are "hanging" around the entry points, but they may be unauthorized? Can you tell me how you hired your giude and what was the cost? Can we book someone in advance or do we have to do it when we arrive? Do guides charge per person or per group? Will they guide just six people or do they group you in larger groups with others?

The tour guides at the entrance to Pompei are all licensed guides, so you don't need to worry. You will be able to tell by the offical badges they wear. Unlicensed guides are immediately reported to the police by the licensed guides in Italy. They don't want any more competition than they already have.
The cost of a tour is per group, not per person, and I would guess that a guide might take just the six of you for a tour. It's possible they could add more if it's fairly crowded, but November is not high season. You might want to spend a few hours there on your own after the tour. Also, I always take my friends to see the National Archeological Museum in Naples when we go to Pompei. Most of the treasures from Pompei and Herculaneum are on display there. Along with many other fabulous pieces. Have a wonderful trip! Cristina

Christina:
Thanks for your informative response. Is it possible to find their going rates somewhere on the internet?

Hi We had an excellent guide, he was an older gentleman whose life wasPompeii, however there are many guides near the entrance, I believe they are all of good standard , I suggest you ask to see their registration. View my Pompeii pages and you will see photos of our guide ( red jumper), you might see him at the entrance.
good luck
