British Virgin Islands What to do off a cruise ship in Road Town, Tortola in Oct
Posted: Fri August 4, 2006 10:17 PM UTC
Going to be in Road Town, Tortola. Travelling with a 3 year old trying to find a nice beach to relax. Don't want to pay an arm and a leg on shore excursions. Just wanted a nice beach with food/drink services. My ship only docks at 3:00PM leaving Midnight (yeah, tell me about it). Any ideas?
If not a beach, any good place for dinner?

Get a cab at the harbor. Cane Garden Bay is the most developed beach, and alot of cruise passengers get taken there. Still, it's gorgeous, "most developed" in the BVI's is still very very low key. It would be great for a kid, and it's big enough you can wander away from any cruise crowd. When I was there most cruise passengers where gone by 3:00. There are several good beach bar/restaurants there. We loved the burgers at Big Banana, you sit on a big covered deck and can enjoy the beautiful sunset.

For a quieter place, get the cab to take you to Smuggler's Cove. There's no real official restaurant, but they have some cool throwned-together little beach bars where you can get snacks and drinks. Get the cabbie to pick you up at dinnertime, and you could eat at Coco Plums, a fun place. Check out traveltalkonline for their BVI forum with great restaurant suggestions.

Thanks a lot for the tip. Looks like I may have the entire beach to myself. Funny how a cruise line will decide to dock at 3:00PM??. By the time I get off the ship and get to the beach, it'll be dusk.

By the way, how far is this Cane Garden Bay from the dock?

It's up over the mountain on the far side of Tortola. You'll need to rent a car or figure out some other means of transportation to get there.
