I would recommend you staying in a township to get a feel of how the majojity of people live. We've a wonderful Guesthouse affordable with ensuite facilities. It's 20minutes away from town.Visit www.accommodate.co.za for more info on our properties?

what kind of budget?
I stayed at a hotel right on the beach in the main beach downtown area for 300 Rand/night. The room was huge and included breakfast. You might want to try this site - it is really good - i looked at a self catering apartment one block from the beach in durban and it was about 1000 rand for 5 days. but www.wheretostay.co.za is really great for looking for a place the parade hotel shows a rate of 230 rand pp for a single room incl. full english breakfast right on the beach sea views are higher priced so ask for a non sea view to save a few rands
