Rothenburg ob der Tauber Travel Forum

My fiance and I are biking parts of the Romantic Road in August. Due to limted time, we have to take the train or bus through some parts of the route. I was searching for a train timetable to take a train from Rothenburg to Dinkelsbuhl with our bikes, but there seem to be no trains that take that route. I am missing something? Are there busses? Can we bring 2 bikes on a bus (is there bike storage on the busses)?

no, You haven't missed something - there is no train running Rothenburg - Dinkelsbühl. Also, YOu can't take a bike into a bus. You can go to Ansbach by train, but that won't help You a lot. But - it is less than 50 km way to go, so You can do this in 3 - 4 hours. Perhaps You can scip annother place for this.

They write that you can bring bicycles on all types of local transport inside the VGN (the local public transport network of this region).

- It must be technically possible (e.g. not on Reisebusse (~ overland buses) or Anrufsammeltaxen (mini taxis running on call)).
comment: With Linienbusse (normally scheduled public-transit buses) it should however work.
- There must be approriate storage place and this place must not be used otherwise.
- On peak times bicycle transport won't work mostly (i.e. passengers using the "storage place" while standing have a higher priority).
- You don't have a guaranteed right on bicycle transport.

You can't get to there from here in Germany. Especially when it comes to the train. But you might consider an alternative route - Rothenburg o.d. Tauber to Wuerzburg and then to Dinkelsbuehl. Or better yet, skip Dinkelsbuehl altogether, and visit (in my opinion) one of the most interesting cities in Franconia, Wuerzburg. There is much more to see there, anyway.

Taking your bikes on buses is theoretically possible, like the person above mentioned, but impractical. If you want more detailed information about train travel, please refer to my page on Germany under the transport tab.
