RE: spiders/snakes??? Posted: Mon July 31, 2006 11:15 PM UTC
Look, in the cities you won't run into snakes...spiders and bugs, well, that's just the reality here, but it's not like they hang around a building disturbing people. You might see the odd spider but of course, in summertime, you'll find bugs. In the rural areas, that could be another story altogether.
The weather in sydney in oct-nov is very pleasant-mid20s but as you're travelling around, it change change a lot depending where you are. I doubt the height of a building is inversely related to the number of spiders, but I could be wrong. Plenty of high rise apartments are available in sydney, but they aren't cheap and then to be on 6 or 12 month leases.

Spiders and bugs are the norm in most cities and countries everywhere. So it's not to say that u won't see them whilst in Australia.
In the cooler months, there aren't many spiders and bugs around. But as the weather hots up, u will find more bugs, usually harmless, but annoying.
If u head out into the bush/outback areas, u will have more chance of coming across a snake than in the city areas.
Instead of an apartment, u might like to look into serviced apartments (similar to hotel, but u have ur own kitchen). Or maybe a hostel if u want to go on the cheap.

G'Day there,
If you come from Sweden then the weather in Oct/Nov will be a very pleasant change from home. While it is the end of Spring the average day time maximum can be anywhere from low 20's up to mid 30's. Also it can be quite windy but that's more so in Sept though can be sometimes in Oct.
Yes, we have the world's most deadly snakes. Something like the top 3 or 4 and most of the top 10, but as previous posters have pointed out you don't have to worry about them in the cities. Spiders you will see will probably be the harmless to humans, "Daddy Long Legs" so named for their long skinny legs. But frankly you shouldn't see too many of them either.
What type of things do you want to see in Australia? Three months gives you plenty of time to see lots. Of course if you are a nature lover then I guess everyone would recommend Uluru, also commonly known as Ayer's Rock in the centre of Australia. Also the Great Barrier Reeef would be another thing that people would universally recommend. Both of these are long distances from Sydney so travel to them by plane would be the quickest option and really not tha much difference in price to train travel which would take you a lot longer. Again though like all travellers, it depends what your interests are. Let us know and not just me, but other visitors to this forum can offer some more specific advice.
How long are you looking at staying in Sydney?
Regards from downunder,
Doug

As the others have said, snakes aren't in the cities. Spiders and bugs get into buildings of course, just they do in Sweden ;-) that includes high rise buildings, but you just see one occassionally, they're not all over the place all the time.
For what you'd like to see in Australia, you first need to look around the pages here on VT and make a list of what you really want to visit. For example, the cities, beaches, tropical islands, Uluru, Great Barrier Reef, rainforest, outback...there's so much.

I have travelled twice in Australia and on neither occasion did I see any snakes or spiders big enough to scare me (and I don't like spiders).

I've lived in country Australia all my life, I grew up on an orchard and had grandparents with a farm where I spent a lot of time...plus have been camping in the mountains MANY times and in my 32 years of life I have seen maybe 3 or 4 snakes. Don't worry about them in the slightest...unless you go looking for them and go looking for trouble, you shouldn't have any hassles with snakes.
As for spiders, I'm totally petrified of them (well, the bigger, hairier ones anyway) and I see them quite often but I've never been bitten and I'm still alive. ;) Most commonly you'll only see small spiders anyway.
And bugs?!?! Well, they're a way of life everywhere in the world as far as I know... The worst 'bugs' you'll probably have to worry about are flies and mozzies. :)
Please don't be scared, you'll have more chance of a meteorite landing on you than being killed by a bug/snake/spider. ;)

Hi Babina,
I can relate to your concerns about spiders and snakes.. I too hate these things, but it's very likely that you won't see any of these things while traveling here. I have lived here for 40+ years.. in cities, on farms, in wooded country, and I have seen maybe 3 or 4 snakes in all that time.. and 2 of these I held on my arms, or wrapped around my neck. Even bushwalking or camping..I never came across any of these.
I had similar concerns when visiting Texas.. and never came across anything like that, even when bushwalking through snake infested areas.
Accommodation places usually use pest control, so put it out of your mind, and enjoy your visit here.
If you are into beautiful coastlines/beaches, Queensland and NSW will not disappoint you. The further north you go, the warmer it gets. Cheers!!! :-)

How on earth do people in the rest of the world imagine we live over here?
Do they think we get out of our beds first thing in the mornings, every day, and wrestle snakes and crocodiles as we make our way through the city streets to the office.
Then lunchtime is spent battling and fighting off hordes of swarming, stinging insects and long fanged, hairy spiders we casually make our way to a favourite cafe...
Then ....
On the homeward journey in the evening we might just be forced to pull out the large wooden club we all feel compelled to carry around at all times to deter drop-bears and European wasps as we make our way through a city park....
Nope....
You will be amazed at the lack of wildlife here ... except for flies ... but then that is another story :-)

Yeah, but we are so broke at the mo' won't be flying anywhere too often for the next 6 months. Except, I have a conference to attend in Adelaide and will be flying there Sat week and coming back on the Tues night. Might have to live on vegemite sandwiches while i'm there1 lol!
Btw, the next BIG Aussie VT meet is scheduled for Perth next year around the end of April. Don't know if I'll get to that one as I need to do some serious saving to get to Bologna next July as part of my italiano studies at Uni here.
