Bonn VT Meeting 27-29 Discussion Thread
Posted: Mon July 31, 2006 09:16 PM UTC
Hello all To-Be Participants and everybody else who's interested in coming!
This is a thread to discuss issues of the meeting.

I thought for all those early birds, I might already post some hotel recommendations:

Youth Hostel Bonn (elevated standard, also family and single rooms)
http://www.djh-rheinland.org/jh/bonn/eng/index.htm
-- inexpensive, excellent value for money, on a hill about 3 km from the city centre (bus connection, taxi to/from city centre will be about 15 EUR)

Hotel Burg Dottendorf
http://www.burgdottendorf.de/indexeg.html
-- small and very neat, prices about average

Hotel Garni Jacobs
-- inexpensive, compareable to a British guesthouse
http://www.hotel-jacobs-garni.de/
also appartments available

Tickets are being bought, thanks for the hotel info
What about this one Win? Is it pretty central
Hotel Consul
Oxfordstr. 12-16
53111 Bonn (City)
Germany

I have a friend who works for octopustravel so can get a good discount, there is a possiblity I could get discount for other folks as well. I assume my friend would get this double / twin hotel room for £90 for the 2 nights.

Hotel itself should be okay, it's very centrally located. Problem might be that it is located on one of Bonn's busiest streets (separating the hotel from the pedestrian zone). If you stay there, make sure you got a room looking out into the courtyard, away from Oxfordstraße. The price is pretty good for a double.

Here is another hotel recommendation:

http://www.hotel-weinhaus-hoff.de/english/index.html

This one is recommended if you don't mind using the tram to get to the city center. The hotel is located in Bad Honnef, a wealthy suburb of Bonn, located on a gentle slope in the Rhine Valley, just beneath the 7-hills range. The 10-minute walk to the tram station leads through wonderful streets lined with expensive half-timbered houses.

I am currently investigating doing our Wine-Tasting there, as the hotel has a well-known Rhenish wine-bar. Even without the wine-tasting, it is a good place to stay, offering very reasonable rates.

The tram ride into Bonn will take about 30 minutes. Distance to city centre is about 10 km.

Here is another link to inexpensive hotels. It might be beneficial (though by no means necessary) to try to find a hotel that is within a 3 km perimeter from Bonn's central railway station (Hauptbahnhof)

I've been given guardianship of Backpackermoose for a couple of months, with strict orders from Rusket that it's my duty to take him travelling.

I've put him out to stud amongst our local deer population and charging the keepers by the hour. If his stamina holds out, we will be there. It's all on the moose now ;o)

LOL I think the last moose that appeared in Germany was an illegal immigrant from Poland and was killed when trying to cross a railway line. However, the Germans are known to be a moose-crazy country (ask the Swedes who had to change their roadsigns because German tourists would steal them when they had a moose picture on them)

I think Backpackermoose will be fine... we will watch for him near the railroad tracks, guard him against crazy robbers and make sure he doesn't drink too much wine.... :)

LOL Ingrid who needs an apartment if you can get a nice hotel room and a prepared breakfast :))

For those of you who know some German, the wine estate we will visit (http://www.weingut-sonnenberg.de) has been featured in regional television -- so I guess it is not such an insider's tip anymore ;)

If you'd like to see the short media clip, follow the link and click on the blue headline "TV-Beitrag ansehen" in the top right corner. Requires Realaudio player.

Bought a casket of Riesling myself in Mayschoss, the vintners' association has some very good terraced, sunny, steep, south-sided yards in the valley. They also have some wonderful light and tasty rosé wines made from the Pinot grapes.

We will be able to sample them all at the winefest in Mayschoss when we visit the village working our way down the valley :))

Cripes. It's easy for me to get to Bonn, Win.
HLX from Birmingham, or Easyjet from Nottingham.
Either are only £77.98 total!!!!!

Now to smile sweetly at the big boss man! ;o)
