Hello,
I might want to study in Ankara for a semester (spring semester next year, probably METU, maybe Bilkent), and have some questions about the student life. Hopefully I get a better picture of life in Ankara this way. When you have other things to tell beside the questions, feel free to post whatever you think is relevant. :-) - Is the METU (and Bilkent) campus far away from the city core? - Are there many things (party's, students hanging around at evenings) to do on the campus or are most students busy with studying? - Are there other places in town where students come to party? - There seem to be strict rules in the dorms about alcohol and being back at 24.00. Are they that strict in practice? - Is there much to do in the city and surroundings? - Do you think it's easy for an international student to make (good) contacts with local students? Quite a lot of questions, thanks in advance for answering! Greets, Jurek from the Netherlands |

Jurek dont worry you will be happy in Ankara.
"Are there many things (party's, students hanging around at evenings) to do on the campus or are most students busy with studying?" If all the students were studying Turkey would be the mighties state on earth. Metu and Bilkent are 15-20 kms away from city centre. But there are always every hour busses and dolmus-taxis to the campus. Dolmus-taxi is a kind of taxi full of 12 personen a minubus who share the price. The price is 1.20 New TL. After 24.00 you will pay dopple. Both Unis are extra modern and bright in education and philosophy. Ankara is a Student paradise . There are 10 Uni.s in Ankara. Lots of Young people happily partying. You will learn every place cafe theather cinema within few hours. People are very friendly. If you dont halt yourself away I am sure you will be one of us. Who knows a beautiful Turkin steals your heart. Well came to us. You can always write to me.

I think you are on the way to ankara.
I just saw your message. I studied in METU. METU is great school with full of activities. but not parties. it is not easy to have parties inside the university. the campus is very big. and there are lots of students. even it is not allowed to drink in the campus, it is almost free... most of the parties appear outside the campus. The dormitories closes at 24:00, but since you are foreign student, I don't think it will be a problem. cause you can enter to the dormitory whenever you want. there is lots of things to do here, but you will prefer to go to istanbul to see history, I think. And it is easy to make friends in the campus. I am living in ankara. let me know if you have any problems.
