the train-ride is about 2 hours one way and you have to change once and they even have direct trains.
The station is in the new part of town, when I remember that correctely, but there is certainly a bus to the cathedral

very doable - train will take you to town and you may have to take a bus as was mentioned up the hill - orvieto is worth seeing if you have time as well donna

would Orvieto be done from Assisi or Rome? I haven't traveled outside of Rome much on my vacations. I have planned a day trip to Florence and now to Assisi. If Orvieto would be a day trip I would like to do that as well. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Donna

Donna -
From Assisi - I recommend Rick Steve's book on Italy - very practice guide and suggestions on itineraries complete with maps that are easy to read. There are a few places to see in Assisi, but all in all is a stroll down one main street with a few stops - significant frescoes by giotto in the main church which escapes me right now - there was an earthquake there which did a great deal of damage, however there has been a restoration since then. Good luck - Dan
