Hello there..

I am looking to do a 4 day trip through the English countryside. My first stop was to get to York and I'm finding that though it's only a 2-hour train ride away, it's fairly expensive. The coach rides are not that cheap and 5 hours is a long time to be stuck in a coach!

Could someone please inform me what's the cheapest way to travel in the countryside? Specifically what's the cheapest way to get to York and what's the approximate cost?

York is a 2-hour train ride away from where? Are you talking about London?
Generally the coaches are cheaper than the trains, but need more time.Train ticket are cheaper when you book in advance.
If you're not living in the UK, you can get a train pass or reduced point-to-point tickets from BritRail. They have to be bought outside the UK.

Indeed. National Express coaches are the cheapest but yes, they take a lot of time compared to the train. Once you are IN York, there are lots of cheap ways to get around the countryside.
