Any suggestions on the best way from Pisa Airport to Lucca? Is it advisable to hire a car or use public transport?

"Advisable"? I don't know what you mean by this. You can certainly do it either by car or public transport...it depends on whether you want to have a car and drive in Italy.
Almost every airport has a website now, so the first ting to do is find the airport's website. In the case of Pisa, it's http://www.pisa-airport.com/ . Then every website has information on how to get to/from the airport. In the case of Pisa, you can go by car, rent car, bus, taxi, and train. Yes, Pisa airport has a train station at the airport (very convenient). Then, if you want to go by train (normally, most intercity traffic between cities of any size in Italy is by train, not so much bus), go to www.trenitalia.com for the website for the national rail system. The solutions that you will see show you that the trip takes 40-60 minutes, and that you probably have to change trains in Pisa Centrale...however, when you buy the ticket at the airport, it should be good for the whole trip. Or you could just rent a car...it's only 36 kilometers away (20 miles)...a short 30 minute trip...see www.viamichelin.com for auto travel planning... Bill

I haven't checked but assume the train would cost a lot less than renting a car.

I'm certain that is true...but we really don't have enough information yet, do we?

In Tuscany, Lazzi (http://www.lazzi.it/) provides some intercity buses, including Pisa airport-Lucca without changes

fabbo, is there a reliable website that lists most or all the local and regional bus systems in Italy? It's often difficult to figure out which bus systems run in which regions. For example, SITA is a big company, but it seems hit or miss which parts of Italy that it does business in...Tuscany (yes), Campania (yes), but Umbria (no), and Lazio (no? I forget, and their website is down). Thanks!
